of quarterly restocking visits
Books change lives, but for many families in rural Natchitoches Parish the nearest library or bookstore is a long drive away. The Kiwanis Club of Natchitoches is bringing books closer to home.
Our club will purchase, install, and stock eight official Little Free Library book-sharing boxes at trusted community anchor sites in eight rural communities outside the Natchitoches city limits. Each library will be stocked with a curated collection of children’s books, including titles by Black authors and books that reflect Louisiana and Cane River cultural heritage.
Club members will handle every installation, lead a community dedication event at each site, and make quarterly restocking visits for at least one year after installation.

Timeline
2026–27 school year: Club members meet with residents and community leaders to choose a host site in each community.
By June 1, 2027: All eight libraries installed, stocked, and dedicated.
Ongoing: Quarterly restocking visits by club members.
How You Can Help
Donate books: New or gently used children’s books are always welcome.
Suggest a host site: Know a church, store, community center, or business in one of these communities that would make a great home for a library?
Volunteer: Help with an installation, a dedication event, or a restocking run.

Terrific Kids
Terrific Kids is a Kiwanis student-recognition program that celebrates elementary students for character, effort, and growth. In the 2025–26 school year, the Kiwanis Club of Natchitoches and our program sponsors recognized 1,224 Terrific Kids in local schools.
Student Service Clubs
Our club sponsors K-Kids clubs at NSU Elementary Lab School, Natchitoches Magnet School, and Provencal Elementary, and Builders Clubs at NSU Middle Lab School and Natchitoches Magnet School. These student-led clubs help young people build leadership skills through service. Learn more about our Service Leadership Programs.

Natchitoches Police win several honors at the third annual KSLA SWEPCO First Responders Awards Event
On September 17, 2026, several members of the Natchitoches Police Department were invited to Shreveport to participate in the third annual KSLA SWEPCO First Responders Awards Event. This event honors exceptional first responders in the Ark-La-Tex region.
The following members of the Natchitoches Police Department were honored at the event:
• Chief Nikeo Collins was presented with the Police Chief of the Year Award • Sergeant John Greely was presented with the Public Information Officer of the Year Award • Detective Charles Cassels was a finalist for Police Officer of the Year
During the presentation for the Police Chief of the Year, it was noted that Chief Nikeo Collins has fostered a culture centered on professionalism, accountability, innovation and officer safety. He understands that a modern police department requires continual investment in both its people and its technology. His leadership has resulted in improved resources, better training, enhanced investigative capabilities and stronger support for the officers who serve the community every day.
Sergeant John Greely was recognized as KSLA’s Public Information Officer of the Year for his leadership, communication skills, commitment to transparency and extensive service to both his department and the community.
